A Study on the use of Biochar- By Farhan, Allan, Ruth, Anish, Yusra
Project guide; Mrs. Srividya
Agriculture is the most concentrated job in the world. The main condition needed for the agricultural practice to be successful is fertile soil. BIOCHAR, is the most efficient way to improve the nutritional content and water retention of the soil. Biochar simply means living charcoal i.e…converting organic matter into charcoal. The Biochar is used as burnt organic matter and mixed into the soil. To confirm that Biochar is a soil amendment in arid climate, experiments were carried out. 2 pots were taken in which one of them being soil+Biochar (proportion being 4.5%) and soil+Fertilizer. Tomato seeds were planted. Within 2 weeks, sapling in Biochar pot reached 4.5 cm and sapling in fertilizer pot was 3.8 cm. Thus it is clear that Biochar is effective more than the inorganic fertilizer which is UREA. With further research on the soil, we checked the retention of both the soils. As per the observations, the mixture of Biochar& soil acquired maximum absorption of waterwhich84.65% and fertilizer being 76.5%. Hence it is clear that Biochar is one of the best soil amendment. We conclude by saying a quote from Mr.Johanness Lehman (Former graduate of Cornell University California) “Adding Biochar to the 10% of the global cropland could sequester the equivalent 29 billion tons Co2”.
